Moving to online orders: start with a manageable process

An order arrives in a shop’s chat, an employee writes down the number and the item is sold to someone else. That broken handover matters more than a missing visual effect. The customer and the team are working from different versions of availability.
For a business moving to remote service in 2020, the first priority is a manageable order journey. Publishing the entire inventory is unnecessary at the start. A small, prepared catalogue is useful when the team can fulfil the orders it accepts.
Choose products the business is ready to sell
Check the initial range for names, photographs, prices and availability. Decide what happens when the last item is requested in the physical shop and online at the same time. Without automatic stock updates, assign someone to confirm availability and explain the rule to customers.
Distinguish a request for an offer from a confirmed order. Unverified stock or delivery capacity should not appear as an unconditional promise. Define exceptions such as preorders, another city or collection-only items.

Connect the customer journey to staff work
Who checks payment, picks the goods and contacts the buyer? Give each stage a responsible person and an agreed state. A notification in a shared chat cannot replace a reliable order register.
A simple register can support an early operation if access is protected, identifiers remain unique and changes can be checked. Do not put customer contact information in a publicly accessible spreadsheet. Limit access to the people who need it for the work.

Complete a test order before launch
- Find a product on a phone and verify the complete offer.
- Place a test order and confirm where it is stored.
- Verify actual payment status and the stock change.
- Rehearse packing, delivery and the response to the customer.
- Test cancellation and an unavailable item separately.
The WooCommerce order documentation treats order management and states as distinct operational concerns. Agree that process before choosing the system. When building an online store, a useful initial result is an order that travels from the customer to the responsible employee and fulfilment without disappearing between steps.
