Suspicious email: verify the link and the request

An email says your domain expires today. Familiar branding surrounds a renewal button and an urgent deadline. Before paying, stop and verify the message through an independent route.
Fraudulent messages do not always contain awkward language. They can use the correct logo, company name and a plausible business situation. A polished design or familiar display name cannot establish authenticity.
Inspect the request’s origin
Gmail’s phishing guidance recommends checking senders and suspicious links. Expand sender details and inspect the full address behind the name. Similar spelling is not the same domain.
Distinguish link text from its actual destination. If a long address is unclear, do not resolve the uncertainty by following it. Be careful on phones, where inspecting a link can lead to an accidental tap.

Verify independently
For a hosting-renewal message, open the provider’s known address yourself or use a saved bookmark. Contact support through previously verified details if needed. A telephone number supplied in the suspicious email is not an independent check.
Requests for passwords, bank details or changed payment instructions deserve particular care. Confirm an urgent request apparently from a colleague through another known channel. Agree this process in advance so employees do not feel uncomfortable questioning a message.

Report an action already taken
If you entered a password, reach the service through its known official route and secure the account. Tell the responsible person. Potential payment or information exposure needs prompt coordination; deleting the email does not resolve it.
- Pause before responding to artificial urgency.
- Inspect the complete sender and destination.
- Use an independently known service address.
- Report suspicious mail through the appropriate tool or internal process.
- Discuss any action already taken with the responsible person.
Technical website maintenance cannot prevent every email-related mistake. Clear internal rules and accessible help allow people to investigate uncertainty promptly and safely.
