A test score and real visitors: lab versus field performance

A site earns a strong test score while someone using an older phone reports slow behaviour. Elsewhere, one test is poor and the next is better. The results may describe different conditions rather than contradict each other.
Distinguishing laboratory tests from actual visits is useful in the 2021 performance discussion. One helps investigate a particular bottleneck; the other describes experience across visitors’ varied environments. Neither fully replaces the other.
Read the test conditions with the result
Lighthouse loads a page under defined conditions. Device and network models, tool version, current load and stored resources affect the result. Desktop and mobile modes are different experiments.
Keep the address consistent too. A homepage test cannot establish the performance of a demanding product page. Record the time and deployed version so the change can be distinguished from other variables. Selecting only the best repeated run distorts the picture.

Actual visits are not one experiment
Google’s Web Vitals tooling guide distinguishes real-user measurement from laboratory diagnostics. Visitors have different phones, connections, locations and behaviour. Their results form a distribution rather than one duration experienced by everyone.
Inspect the reporting period and scope. Data may describe a particular page or a broader group. Insufficient data does not mean zero delay or perfect performance. A recent deployment also takes time to be reflected in historical measurements.

Verify improvements through both routes
Find a reproducible issue first: a large main image, delayed response or expensive script. Compare the change under equivalent test conditions. Then review the appropriate real-user period and the tasks people complete.
- Select the homepage and important additional page types.
- Save conditions and several test results.
- Identify the period and scope of actual-visit data.
- Test navigation and forms as well as measurements.
- Assess the effect as new visitor data accumulates.
During performance work, the score supports investigation. The goal is a person completing their task reliably without unnecessary waiting.
