Online catalogue or store: choose the customer journey first

An equipment buyer needs dimensions, installation and compatibility confirmed before purchase. A shopper choosing an ordinary household item may prefer a fixed price and immediate checkout. Both need product information, but their next actions can differ.
Do not begin the decision with whether a basket is available. Describe how customers buy and what must be confirmed before payment. Then decide between a catalogue, a store or a deliberate combination.
When requesting an offer fits
A catalogue can suit products whose price depends on configuration, quantity or site conditions. The page still needs useful models, specifications, photographs and a clear next step. “Price on request” is not a reason to hide necessary details.
Include the selected model in the enquiry automatically. Customers should not retype a code they just found. If several items can be collected for discussion, distinguish the quote list from a purchase basket so its consequence is clear.

Immediate purchase needs operational readiness
A store needs a defined offer: the variant, price, availability and delivery route. The WooCommerce product documentation distinguishes attributes, variations and inventory. Populate them from verified business information.
The team must also be able to handle paid orders. Enabling a payment button cannot organise stock, packing and support. If some items have a direct price while others need an individual offer, make the distinction clear on each page.

Test one actual customer journey
- The customer finds a product and assesses suitability.
- They understand whether the price is final.
- They choose purchase or an offer request correctly.
- Staff receive the relevant model and conditions.
- The customer gets a clear explanation of the next step.
Choose functions around that journey when building a website. A good catalogue can later gain purchasing features, but assess data and service readiness before making that change.
